More
Than Gold
sports camps and clinics were established in 1996
to build solid sports skills and strong Christian character.
Basketball was the first sport used for this purpose. After 17
years, there have been soccer, baseball, wrestling, and all-sports
camps/clinics in multiple states and foreign countries. Tennis was added
in 2012. More Than Gold is also a gospel-centered resource for Upward,
Junior Prep Stars, Salvation Army, YMCA and others conducting sports programs.
Courts, fields & black tops
are common sites for Sportsreach camps and clinics. Campers, 7-14
years old, have attended half-day and full-day events at
churches, schools, parks, and street corners for the past 17 years.
Cross training, Today's Heroes, contests, and team play highlight all
camps and clinics sponsored by CEF Ministries of North Carolina in
Durham. Local coaches, players, church leaders serve as staff. The YMCA,
Salvation Army, community-based ministries, and churches are local
collaborating organizations.

Sponsoring City Kids Campaign in
full-swing
Coach Larry Parrish was honored with reunion of past players
and coaches on March 17, 2012. NCAA basketball tournament games were watched
during the afternoon and a roast of Coach Parrish in the evening kicked off a campaign
towards sponsoring 1,000 city kids for camp this summer. Coach Parrish, who coached at
Jordan, Southern, and Riverside High Schools in Durham, has mentored and made a positive
mark on hundreds of athletes, coaches and many youth for 44 years. He started Prep Stars
Invitational Basketball Camps and the Junior Prep Stars Basketball School as well as
had an impact on the development of the CEF More Than Gold sports camps. The
stories were numerous during the reunion. The laughter was refreshing. Some players had
not seen each other for over 30 years. Coach Parrish said, "...the memories were worth a
million dollars." The campaign will continue throughout 2013.

Summer
is a special time for sports outreach-mission trips with this CEF
chapter. The More Than Gold sports staff has held camps during past
summers in various USA cities. Sports outreach events and
camps/clinics are usually conducted at local churches, sports centers
and outdoor city courts. Thousands of city kids were enrolled
during week-long Bible clubs and sport camps in most cities
like Savannah and Little Rock. The summer in Chicago was a unique
opportunity for stepping onto outdoor courts, uninvited, and engage
youth with organized play with 3-on-3 tournaments and sharing the
Gospel. Any USA city is a welcomed site for this collaborative mission
between the More Than Gold staff, local churches, and/or ministry
volunteers.
